Front Street – Lahaina Maui

At the Baldwin House I learned how the Robber Barons of the late 1800’s took over all the Islands by force, so they could make their fortunes. They tried to exterminate the Hawaiians and remove all their cultural aspects. All the Royal Buildings were destroyed.

Lahaina became a whaling town.

Now it is pure entertainment, the sunsets are brilliant.

Upon arriving at Maui

In the past, I’ve been to the Big Island of Hawaii, Oahu, and Kauai. I had avoided Maui because I thought it was the most “elite”, dominated by 5 star experiences.  I don’t know why I felt this way.

What I found was a laid back experience much like the Florida Keys.  The Kahana & Napili areas have character.

I also can’t believe how close Molokai and Lanai are to Maui. They are impressive sights.

A Wild Moose Chase

I’ve spent a lot of time in the woods of the northern states of the U.S., but I’ve never seen a moose. So yesterday I set off on 300 mile journey visiting the sites in Vermont and NH that have the highest moose sightings – knowing ahead of time this would be about the adventure and not really about the moose.

Along the way, I ran into a family from Michigan that spent over 2 hours last night in their car camped out by a Moose Crossing sign. They were irritated, no moose showed up.

Another man said that at Moose Alley near the Canadian border, people park there at night and wait.

My barista at the coffee shop Moose Muck said that a couple from New Zealand stopped in to the shop and asked to see the moose!
What these people and others don’t understand is that it’s not really seeing the moose that is important, but being where the moose are. They live in beautiful places filled with treasures. That is the true meaning of going on a Wild Moose Hunt…

Kaffe, Bier, Food – Germany

My first trip to Germany.  I was expecting and ate plenty of Spatzle, Schnitzel, and Pretzels.  I was worried there wouldn’t be any coffee shops.  Plenty of coffee and the other food was fantastic.  The pizza in Germany is very good, my favorite was in Dresden.  The Doner kebabs were outstanding everywhere.  Of course the beer and sausages were top of the line.  The Apple Cake was delicious.

Bratwurst Neuschwanstein

In St. Louis, Missouri we have a local brewery (Schlafly) that makes a good Kolsch. I get teased from my German friends that Kolsch in Germany is a lightweight beer – almost like a wine cooler. But, I still like to buy Schlafly’s version, and I enjoy it.

The first beer I ordered in Germany at the Joseph Roth Diere restaurant was a Kolsch they were highlighting.  My friends ordered other more “weighty” choices.  The bartender brought out these giant steins of beers to my friends, and then brought me the thin but elegant glass of Kolsch.  The bartender saw my look of dismay, and laughed heartily.  I think this verified my friends warning.  Live and Learn.

Desert Blooming

Near Lake Roosevelt in central Arizona, you can find the Tonto National Monument. If you visit in March you will find the plants abloom. The cliff dwellings are impressive too.  The Apache Trail is a treacherous but scenic drive.
