The Dry Tortugas National Park

As I work my way to all the U.S. National Parks, I get to explore different worlds.  The Tortugas offer miles of underwater barrier reefs filled with anemones, sea urchins, fish, coral, and mollusks. The ruins of Fort Jefferson provides an eery backdrop to the picturesque blues of the Gulf of Mexico.  Fort Jefferson mainly served as a notorious prison during and after the Civil War.

Quest: Six new national parks

On my quest to visit all the National Parks in the United States, this summer I was able to explore six in Alaska and California.  I will post one photo from each park. Out of 60 parks, I have now visited 40.

Denali National Park, Wrangell-St. Elias, Glacier Bay, Redwoods N.P., Kenai Fjords Exit Glacier, and Lassen National Park.

Botany Bay – Edisto Island, S.C.

Last summer I stumbled on to the stunning Botany Bay Beach on the barrier island – Edisto Island.  This part of the island is constantly being eroded and the sand is deposited on the south end of the island.  Change of over time.

Digging Deeper into Missouri

I continue my journey to see all of the 90+ Missouri State Parks and Historic Sites.  Some of these places are incredibly remote.  I just can’t imagine many people visit Clark’s Hill or the Osage Village. I am pleased to say that I have.

November in the Sun

A brilliantly sunny November day lured us to one of Missouri’s best state parks – Meramac.  Although I didn’t notice a single bird, we did find a wasp carting away an immobilized spider, a woodchuck basking in the sun, frogs glistening in Sheep’s Cave, and tadpoles and minnows dancing around in the creeks.  The Sycamore’s stark white bark reflected the bright rays of the sun in a spectacular fashion.  A chilly morning hike followed by lunch on the river and accented by the exploration of a cave provided us with a stunning backdrop for a day out with friends.

Crashing Waves of Maui

In the Kahana area in west Maui, there are quite a few peaceful coves and perfect snorkeling areas. But elsewhere on the island the waves are magnificently brutal. Here are some rocky coasts with crashing white waves.
